New research suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
